MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. —
Alyssa Velez blasted a seventh-inning home run, while
Madelyn Wise tossed 2.1 scoreless innings to propel the Flagler College softball team over Georgia College, 6-5, for its fourth straight victory Saturday at the Peeler Complex.
The win completed the Saints' first Peach Belt Conference three-game series sweep to improve them to 24-19 and 9-9 in conference play. GC surrendered its second straight sweep to move to 11-27 and 3-15 in conference.
Flagler jumped out early in this one, scoring four runs in the first frame and cruising along before adding one more in the third. The Bobcats responded in the fifth with a five-run frame. Pitcher Golden Thrower relieved Brayden Latimer in the circle after the Saints' bats ripped four hits for four runs, including a stolen base home for
Paige Maseda, in the first inning. Thrower cooled Flagler down, even allowing her team to get back into the game, but Velez had the last say and Wise made sure to keep it that way.
Wise (W, 8-5) relieved
Rachel Hester in the fifth inning following five Bobcat runs on six hits to even the score. The junior righty calmed the situation as she tossed an almost perfect 2.1 innings. She didn't allow a hit or run, while walking one (her first batter) and striking out three to keep the Saints in it.
That's when Velez's seventh home run conveniently came in the seventh frame and proved to be the game-winning run in the innings' first at-bat. Velez and
Kyleigh Taylor each had two RBI, while
Olivia Parker and Velez led the squad with two hits.
Gianna Amundsen had a team-high two walks, while Velez scored three of the six runs and Maseda stole two bases.
Valerie Beltre,
Courtney Robinson,
Madelyn Childs and Taylor all had hits.
The Saints will be back in action when they travel to Embry-Riddle for a midweek doubleheader Tuesday, beginning at 4 p.m.
