Women's tennis defeats Northwood, 6-1

ST. AUGUSTINE — In their first match back outdoors, the ninth-ranked Flagler College women's tennis team downed Michigan-based Northwood University, 6-1, at the Flagler Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.

The Saints (3-4) cruised to the doubles point, winning on all courts that began with a 6-0 win by Luisa Hrda and Eden Schlagenhauf on court one. The duo of Anika Nissen and Alessandra Traub clinched the point with a 6-1 win on court two, and then Alice Benvegnu and Florencia Massardo Brain took with the sweep with a 6-4 victory.

Flagler took the momentum into singles as the Saints immediately won three straight points, beginning with Nissen on court five in a dominant 6-0 and 6-1 win. Hrda followed with a straight-set, 6-0 and 6-3 win, in top singles, while Traub clinched the match on court three with a 6-2 and 6-1 win.

Northwood (5-4) took the win on court five, but it was the only one the Wolves would see. Schlagenhauf gritted out a three-set win that featured a tie-breaking win first set; on court two meanwhile, Addison Skye Breunich battled back from her set-one loss to secure her first collegiate victory on court six.

The Saints will be back in action Wednesday when 13th-ranked Wingate comes to town for a massive in-region test at 10 a.m.
