ST. AUGUSTINE — The Flagler College softball team wrapped up its Peach Belt Conference three-game series versus Columbus State University Monday afternoon at Flagler Field as the Saints dropped the third game, 6-3.
Flagler (12-10, 1-2 PBC) has a quick turnaround with a trip to Miami to face Barry University tomorrow, with the doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m., while Columbus State (11-10, 4-2) will remain in the Sunshine State with a doubleheader at Barry on Wednesday.
The Saints got the start they wanted, scoring first as
Paige Maseda, who was doubled around to third via
Alyssa Velez's extra-base hit, slid into home plate on a wild pitch. The Cougars matched the run, plus one in the second inning via a long ball by Madeline Parker that proved to put the visitors up for good. Flagler struggled to push runners across, leaving 11 on base to Columbus State's seven as miscues added up to help the Cougars add onto the lead.
All four of CSU's runs in the fifth inning were unearned.
Rachel Hester (L, 4-5) shouldered the loss as she scattered three hits through 4.1 innings and allowed just the two earned runs in the second inning. In relief,
Taylor Scott allowed four hits as both runs that scored were unearned.
The Saints tacked on a run in the fifth and sixth inning —
Mercedes Salinas' sac fly and Velez's RBI-single — but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback against Hannah Rose Corbin (W, 9-3). Velez led the Saints with two hits, while
Valerie Beltre, Maseda,
Kyleigh Taylor and Salinas each had one.
