ST. AUGUSTINE — Madelyn Wise tossed her second consecutive complete game, allowing just four hits on one run; however, it wasn't enough as the Flagler College softball team couldn't match Florida Southern College's fifth-inning run in a 1-0 loss Saturday at chilly Flagler Field.
The Saints (1-2) were only able to muster together two hits — one from
Kyleigh Taylor and the other from
Alyssa Velez — against Mocs' pitcher Tiana Hernandez (W, 1-0) in their third game of the Flagler Invitational. Those two hits came in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, after Florida Southern (2-0) took the lead in the fifth thanks to leadoff hitter Kelsey Peck's bases-loaded, fielder's choice ball that scored Skyler Ralstin.
Ralstin led the Mocs with a pair of hits as Maddi Conner, Jadin Dewith and Ralstin all had one come in that fifth inning. Even then, Wise (1-1) was able to work herself out of the jam with just the one run allowed. The Saints had chances in the final two innings, but were unable to build off the singles from Taylor and Velez.
Flagler will see Florida Southern again when the Saints head to Chris Bellotto Field for a doubleheader next Wednesday, starting at 3 p.m. Weather permitting, the Saints will be back for a matchup with Lynn University Sunday at 3 p.m. The Flagler-Lynn late matchup Saturday night was called off due to rain in the bottom of the first inning.
