ST. AUGUSTINE –
Jalen Barr recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and a career high 19 rebounds to help No. 21 (NABC Division II Top 25) Flagler College to a 69-60 win over Columbus State University in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler extended its winning streak to eight games and improved to 18-3 overall and 11-1 in the Peach Belt. The Saints also completed their first-ever sweep of the Cougars. Columbus State fell to 15-7 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
"I am proud of how hard we battled, defended, and kept grinding," said head coach
Chad Warner. "They had us completely off balance in the first half. I was proud that we competed and found a way to win. We could not have done that today without the tremendous crowd support. They made a huge impact on the outcome."
The Cougars trimmed the deficit to three (58-55) with just under two minutes left in regulation. The Saints made 9-of-10 from the free throw line the rest of the way and finished the game on an 11-5 run. Barr was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line in that run.
Barr's 19 rebounds are tied for fourth-most in the NCAA Division II era of the program's history. He added three blocks and three steals.
Jaizec Lottie also notched his fourth double-double of the year as he scored a game-high 21 points, 14 of which came in the second half, and he tacked on 11 rebounds. He dished out a game-high six assists.
Derrick Ellis, Jr. chipped in with 11 points.
Flagler dominated the boards out-rebounding Columbus State 53-36. Thirteen of those rebounds were on the offensive end and led to 20 second chance points.
Hunter Preston led Columbus State with 16 points, and he completed the double-double with 10 rebounds. Langston Gaither and Grant Howard each supplied 12 points.
Flagler visits Georgia Southwestern State University on Wednesday (Feb. 9). The game will tip around 7:30 p.m. at The Storm Dome.
