Coaching at Flagler
Chad Warner completed his fifth season as head men’s basketball coach, serving the Flagler College program as the seventh head coach in its history. Warner arrived in the Ancient City in April 2017 after a stint as special assistant to the head coach and recruiting coordinator at NCAA Division I member Valparaiso (Ind.) University.

In just five seasons under Warner, the Saints have experienced unprecedented success and transformed into a conference and national contender.

This past season (2021-22), Flagler won more Peach Belt Conference games (14) than it ever had since joining the league in 2009-10. The Saints went to post a 23-8 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. Warner coached star player Jaizec Lottie to his second consecutive NABC Division II All-America honor. Lottie also earned his second consecutive PBC Player of the Year award. Flagler also achieved it's highest national ranking, No. 2, in the NCAA Division II preseason top 25.

The Saints continued to set program records in the 2020-2021 season. The season began with Warner leading the Saints to the program’s first two wins over Division I opponents in program history. Flagler defeated Central Michigan University (92-73) and the University of North Florida (73-66).

Flagler set a program record going 11-1 in Peach Belt Conference play, culminating in the program’s first PBC regular season and tournament championships. Warner then guided the Saints to their first-ever NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearance, tearing through the NCAA South Regional. Flagler beat perennial power University of Alabama Huntsville in the South Region title game to secure a spot in the Elite Eight, where the Saints scored a 70-69 win over No. 7-ranked Truman State. Warner's group became just the third team in Flagler NCAA Division II era to advance to the national semifinals.

The Saints saw a program best five student athletes earn PBC All-Conference awards. Jaizec Lottie earned first team honors as well as PBC Player of the Year. Forward Chris Metzger earned a spot on the second team and Jalen Barr and Derrick Ellis, Jr., were named to the third team. Additionally, Barr was named PBC Defensive Player of the Year.

Lottie was the first player in program history to earn National Association of Basketball Coaches' (NABC) All-America honors, while Warner himself added 2020-21 NABC South Region Coach of the Year plaudits to his 2020-21 PBC Coach of the Year honor.

In 2019-20, Warner and the Saints broke through, earning the program's first Peach Belt Conference Tournament berth after posting a 14-15 overall record and a 10-10 mark in league play. The 10 conference victories were the most for the program since moving to the PBC. Gedi Juozapaitis was the first Flagler men's basketball student-athlete to earn first-team all-conference honors.

The Saints went 5-17 in the PBC in Warner's second season at the helm (2018-19) and finished with an 8-20 overall record. 13 of Flagler's losses were by 10 points or fewer, showing signs of the beginnings of a program turnaround.

In his first season with the Saints, Warner coached the team to a 9-17 overall record and a 6-16 league mark. The six conference wins were the most for the program since the 2012-13 season. Vaughn McCall was selected to the all-conference third-team.

Prior to Flagler
Warner was part of a Valpo coaching staff that led the program to one of its most successful seasons in program history in 2016-17. The Crusaders won 24 games and claimed a share of the Horizon League regular season title, the program's fifth regular season title in the last six years. Valpo also advanced to the postseason for the seventh straight season, earning an at-large berth into the NIT. One of his players, Alec Peters, was selected in the second round of the 2017 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns.

Prior to his stint at Valpo, Warner was the head coach for eight successful seasons at Shorter University in Rome, Ga. He was the winningest coach in program history with 156 victories, including a school record 34 wins in 2011-12. That year, Shorter advanced to the NAIA Division I “Fab Four” and was ranked No. 1 nationally for much of the season. He was named the 2012 NABC NAIA Division I National Coach of the Year.

He guided the Shorter program through its transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II, starting with the 2012-13 season. The Hawks posted 21 wins and won the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Division I national title. He was named the Georgia Basketball Coaches Association (GABCA) Division II Coach of the Year in 2013.

At Shorter, he coached six NAIA All-Americans, nine All-Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) selections, two SSAC Newcomers of the Year, 18 academic all-conference picks and four NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Seven of Warner’s former players have gone on to sign professional contracts overseas.

Prior to his time at Shorter, Warner spent two seasons in two separate stints (2006-07 and 2003-04) as an assistant coach at NCAA Division III member Hampden-Sydney (Va.) College. The Tigers won Old Dominion Athletic Conference title in both seasons he served as an assistant. Warner also served as an assistant coach for two seasons (2004-06) at the College of William & Mary, a NCAA Division I school located in the historic town of Williamsburg, Va.

Warner got his start in collegiate coaching at his alma mater, the University of Georgia, where he served as a graduate assistant under legendary head coach Jim Harrick.

He received his bachelor’s in journalism from Georgia in 1998 where he earned a walk-on spot as a freshman under head coach Hugh Durham. Following graduation, Warner spent four years as an associate head coach at the Darlington School in Rome, Georgia.
