DAYTONA BEACH — History was made Friday night as the Flagler College men's lacrosse team took the field for the first time in program history against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Seven hundred-plus fans were in attendance for the Saints' inaugural game at ERAU Lacrosse field, a record for the facility.
Embry-Riddle struck first, with 13:39 left in the first period when Coleman Jacobs found the back of the net. The Saints responded a couple minutes later when
Ty Tom etched his name in the Flagler men's lacrosse record book, with the first goal in the history of the young program.
The Saints took their only lead of the night when
Jackson Krasny beat the Eagles' netminder with 7:40 left in the first period.
The Eagles responded with eight unanswered goals, including scoring five in the second quarter to take control.
In the third quarter, the lead was cut down to four following a three-goal run, in which the Saints got three goals from three different players in Tom, fellow captain
Thomas Pritchard and
Geraint Shaw.
ERAU got the lead back up to seven, 5-12, by the fourth quarter. But the Saints refused to quit fighting in their inaugural game. Tom earned two hard-fought goals to close the gap to five, 12-7. ERAU and Flagler would close the game by trading goals with
Tyler Douglass netting one with 59 seconds left. The Eagles added one more goal with less than 10 seconds left to make the final score, 14-8.
Faceoff man
Jake Griffin had an exceptional night in the circle, winning 15 of 26 faceoffs and collecting nine ground balls. Douglass also recorded the first assist in program history when he assisted on Shaw's goal.
The young team hits the road for their second game when they take on the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic University on Feb. 13 at 2 p.m.
