ST. AUGUSTINE – In a non-conference doubleheader at Flagler Field, the Flagler College softball team fell in a tough twin bill against the Florida Tech Panthers as the Saints dropped the pair, 7-0 and 4-2, Tuesday night.
In the first game, the Panthers (10-5) scored early in the first inning behind a two-run home run from Cheyenne Nel. The Saints (9-7) kept it within striking distance until Florida Tech spotted five runs — with only one being earned — in the sixth inning to pull away. Despite taking the loss,
Madelyn Wise (L, 4-3) struck out seven batters while going the distance.
In the final game, the scoreboard held goose eggs until the fourth inning when the Panthers used a long-ball again to get on the board. This time it was Mikayla Lewi, scoring two in the fourth and again in the sixth, to give the away team the 4-0 advantage.
Flagler used a seventh-inning rally — behind a
Alexis Ridgell pinch-hit, hit-by-pitch to bring in a run followed by
Lucy Giebeig's bases-loaded fielder's choice ball — but the two runs were all the Saints would muster.
On the day,
Valerie Beltre led Flagler with three hits, while Merecdes Salinas had two,
Kyleigh Taylor and
Ari Bosch had one.
The Saints now look to their next doubleheader when second-ranked Valdosta State University visits Wednesday, March 2 at Flagler Field.
