ST. AUGUSTINE - Flagler College women's tennis head coach
Rodrigo Puebla announced the squad's 2023 spring schedule Tuesday afternoon.
"We have a very strong schedule for this spring," said head coach Puebla. "Making ITA National Indoors for third year in a row, shows how strong our program is at a national level. I am looking forward to see the leadership of our three returners, but I am also excited to see how our five new players will compete this season."
The 2023 slate features 15 home matches and eight away match-ups. The Saints are set to play 16 matches in the sunshine state and the other seven matches will be in four different states.
Flagler kicks off 2023 on the road at the Florida Southern Invitational in Lakeland, Florida, from Feb. 4 through Feb. 5. The team then returns home for three straight matches, playing host to Newberry College (Feb. 11), Rollins College (Feb. 16) and Nova Southeastern University (Feb. 18).
The Saints travel to Kearney, Nebraska compete in the International Tennis Association Division II National Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Nebraska, Kearney Feb. 24 through Feb. 26. Flagler is set to face Saint Leo University first on Feb. 24.
The squad returns to the sunshine state for four straight home matches, starting with Salem University (March 3), then Northwood University (March 6), Lee University (March 7) and Tusculum University (March 9).
The Saints have a pair of matches in North Carolina, first against Belmont Abbey on March 11 and then at Wingate the following day.
The women's tennis team then hosts four straight matches at the Flagler Tennis Center starting with Washburn University (March 17) and Palm Beach Atlantic University (March 21).
Peach Belt Conference play begins during the second half of the Saints' four-match home stretch on March 24th with a match against Georgia College & State University. The Saints have a PBC match against Columbus State University the next day.
The following weekend, the squad travels to Georgia for conference matches against the University of North Georgia (April 1) and Young Harris College (April 2).
The Saints then host three straight matches in the Nation's Oldest City including matches against the Academy of Art (April 4), Barry University (April 7) and Georgia Southwestern State University (April 8).
Flagler rounds out the regular season with a match at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina April 14 and then returns home for its final match against Augusta University on April 16.
The PBC Tournament will be held in Columbus, Georgia at the John W. Walden Tennis Center April 21 through 23.
The squad went 38-14 in singles competition this Fall and 22-9 in doubles competition.
Luisa Hrda (10-3) and
Nadja Meier (9-2), led the way for the Saints in singles. Hrda and
Eryka Kruk held a strong 7-1 record in doubles competition while Meier and
Dana Heimen went 6-3.
Hrda is coming of a fall season where she posted a 10-3 record, which included winning the ITA Southeast Region title and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the ITA Cup. The doubles team of Hrda and Kruk won the ITA Southeast Regional as they were match up against Meier and Heimen. Both tandems participated in the ITA Cup with Hrda and Kruk advancing to the quarterfinal round.
Flagler women's tennis was well-represented in the Preseason ITA Division II National Rankings sponsored by Tennis Point. Hrda (No. 6), Meier (No. 13) and Heimen (No. 30) all earned a spot in the top 50 singles rankings. The doubles team of Hrda and Kruk are ranked No. 6 while Heimen and Meier are ranked No. 10.
The Saints concluded the 2022 spring campaign sporting a 19-8 record, with 21 of those matches being against teams who were ranked at the time. The 2022 roster helped earn the program's first Peach Belt Conference regular-season title, the opportunity to earn the No. 2 regional seed and host for the first time ever followed by a trip to the team's first Elite Eight appearance.
