WINGATE, N.C.-Monique Whiteman paced the Flagler women's cross country team to a fourth place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships in Wingate, North Carolina on Nov.19.
 
"Our goal all year has been to advance to the national championship, so to miss out on one of the auto-qualifying spots is disappointing," head coach of men's and women's cross country/ director of cross country and track Brian Beil said. "We knew that we would have to run well today in order to make it."
 
Whiteman crossed the finish line at 22:23.99, securing seventh place out of 147 runners.
 
Megan Churchill followed in 15^th place with a time of 22:40.34.
 
Enola Savel (22:50.41), Marissa Kempf (23.24.62) and Abby Misch (23.44.44) were the next three Saints to finish, hauling in 18^th, 37^th and 42^nd place.
 
Chloe Smith earned a 43^rd place with a time of 23:46.85, followed by Monika Kubai in 54^th with a time of 24:05.94.
 
"Unfortunately, we've been battling some sickness lately and it just didn't go our way today," Beil said. "We'll take the strength we've gained from this training cycle and move on to be better for the next one.  There is still a chance for an at-large bid as a team, but it seems unlikely. Monique is also in the running for at-large bid."
 
Overall, the Saints earned 199 team points. The top three teams were the following: No.1 Wingate University (46), No.2 Anderson University and No.3 Catawba College (88).
 
The top three teams advance to the NCAA National Championship in Seattle, Washington on Dec.2. The top three individuals from teams not advancing will qualify to compete in the national meet.
