ST. AUGUSTINE - The No. 20 Flagler College women's soccer team edged Lander University, 2-1, Saturday afternoon to earn its fifth Peach Belt Conference win.
Â
"Today was a fierce battle against a relentless Lander side," said head coach
Ashley Martin. "We created some good early chances but were unable to capitalize. However, we broke the deadlock with an excellent set piece. The team fought its way back again and found the winning goal through pure determination."
Â
The match got off to a slow start, with neither team able to score in the first half. The Saints (7-2-2, 5-1-1 PBC) took eight shots in the 45 minutes, but Lander's Taylor Frew made four saves, keeping the score at 0-0 going into the second half.
Â
In the 50th minute,
Andrea Fernandez sent in a corner kick from the left side and connected with
Chloe Byrne. Byrne headed the ball into the top middle of the net for her first goal of the season to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Â
Lander (3-4-5, 1-2-3 PBC) answered back in the 68th minute when Mia Piazza shot from two yards outside of the box and launched the ball into the top right corner of the net on a feed from Mary Moosbrugger to make it an even 1-1 game.Â
Â
With under six minutes left in the match,
Josefine Nilsen received a pass from Fernandez and took a shot just inside the box. Lander's Frew dove for the shot and had a hand on it, but the ball dribbled behind her into the back of the net to secure Flagler's 2-1 victory.
Â
Flagler had the advantage in shots (19-8), shots on goals (9-6) and corner kicks (6-5). Frew made six saves while the Saints'
Madison North made five stops in the net.
Â
The Saints travel to Bluffton, South Carolina for a road conference match at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m.
