Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Hrdá wins program's first ITA Southeast Regional championship

SUMTER, S.C. — Luisa Hrda continues to ink her name into the Flagler College women's tennis record book.

Coming off a season where she clinched the Saints' first Peach Belt Conference Championship, Hrdá became the first to be crowned an ITA Southeast Regional champion after she defeated Carson-Newman University's Ana Carla Resende, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), in the championship Monday afternoon at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

"Luisa played exceptional tennis and she did not lose a set the entire tournament," Flagler head coach Rodrigo Puebla said. "She is getting mentally stronger with every match and every practice, and I believe she could do very good things at the National Tournament (ITA cup) in Rome, Ga., October 14-17, where all the region winners will compete.

"Having Luisa win the tournament makes me so proud of her but also all the girls. Our team knew going into this weekend we needed to mentally prepare for a long weekend of tennis. The ITAs are known to be a very physical tournament, and it always demonstrates if the players can overcome the difficulties of the tournament."

Under Puebla's leadership, Flagler has been in the championship four straight years before solidifying the trophy Monday. Hrdá's road to victory began on Friday as the top-seeded singles' player ripped through competition, winning five straight before serving up a thriller in the finale. It was also a first that Flagler held not only the No. 1 seed with Hrdá but also the No. 2 seed with Eden Schlagenhauf.

Alongside Hrdá, Flagler had five singles' players — Schlagenhauf, Alessandra Traub, Anika Nissen, Ebba Rosberg, and Florencia Massardo Brain — competing in the ITA Southeast Regional with Schlagenhauf, Traub, Nissen and Rosberg winning two matches and advancing to the round of 16. After losing the opening-round match, Massardo Brain bounced back in the consolation bracket, winning a pair alike her teammates.

In doubles, the Saints had two (Hrdá/Rosberg and Schlagenhauf/Traub) make it to the round of 16, while the duo of Schlagenhauf/Traub made it to the semifinals before falling to familiar faces in Vaishali Jorge/Johanna Lippert of North Georgia.

"I am extremely happy the way the girls prepared for this event and the way we were able to compete," Puebla said. "Having five players in the round of 16 shows that we are making amazing progress in our program."
