ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Andrea Fernandez scored her first multi-goal game, while
Jess Leach and
Lorena Lopez scored one apiece to lead the top-ranked Flagler College women's soccer team in its 4-0 rout of Peach Belt Conference foe Young Harris College at Saints Field Saturday afternoon.
"Today was a wonderful display," Flagler College head coach
Ashley Martin said. "I thought we were solid defensively and hugely dangerous in attack.
Andrea Fernandez had a standout performance with two goals and an assist, but the team around her was fantastic too. Today, I was also immensely happy to see
Lorena Lopez get a goal, as I felt her performance deserved it."
All facets were clicking for Flagler (5-0, 2-0 PBC) as the offense fed off the lock-down defense that secured its first clean sheet of the season and allowed only three shots, with two on goal. Goalkeeper
Madison North logged her first complete-game victory to go along with the shutout to lead Flagler in the net.
Meanwhile, the fiery offense ripped off 22 shots and saw the first two of four goals come in the first 25 minutes thanks to Fernández and Leach. The Saints had 10 corner kicks while the Mountain Lions (3-3, 0-2) didn't have any.
In the sixth minute, the freshman Fernández volleyed an assist from
Annie Habeeb and sent it into the top of the net to put the Saints in front for good. It didn't take long for Flagler to add onto the lead as Leach scored her second of the season —via a penalty kick — to make it 2-0 in the 25th minute.
The next two scores came in the 65th and 82nd minute, respectively, as Lopez had the first to open the second half thanks to a cross from Fernández that set the senior up perfectly for the bang-bang score and 3-0 lead. Next, it was Fernández on the receiving end again, heading in a cross from
Hannah Dolores to cap the scoring and hand the freshman from Spain her fourth goal of the season.
Up Next: The Saints hit the road for its next PBC matchup Wednesday, Sept. 29 at Georgia Southwestern, beginning at 5 p.m.
