AMERICUS, Ga. — Maddie Poole and
Sara Carr scored their first goals of the season, while
Andrea Fernandez and
Josefine Nilsen netted their team-high fifth each to propel the No. 2-ranked Flagler College women's soccer team past Georgia Southwestern, 4-2, in the Peach Belt Conference match Wednesday night at Hurricane Field.
"GSW provided a tough test today," Flagler head coach
Ashley Martin said. "We had to work extremely hard to create opportunities against a very disciplined team, and they also gave us plenty to do on the defensive side. They deservedly went 1-0 up with a fabulous strike, but we then answered back with a great strike of our own from
Maddie Poole. We had some moments of individual quality, which helped us take the lead, followed by a really nice team goal on the fourth."
Before halftime approached, the Saints (6-0, 3-0 PBC) scored the equalizer — plus one — as Poole volleyed hers from way out and fit it right under the top crossbar to knot the score that GSW (4-4, 0-3) had first in the 16th minute.
And then not even 20 seconds later, Fernández took the pass through the middle from
Shannon Matthaei and dribbled through defenders before lifting it into the net and celebrating what proved to be the game winner with her teammates.
Behind the 2-1 lead, Carr added onto in the 49th minute when she collected a pass from
Emery Biggs — via a rebound from the corner kick — and deposited it for the two-goal lead. The Hurricanes would then score one more in the 63rd minute thanks to a penalty kick, but it wasn't enough to knot things up.
Amit Beilin picked up her second win in goal for the Saints, allowing the two goals while having three saves. Her offense had her back with four goals and out-shooting the 'Canes, 19-9.
Josefine Nilsen added the final goal for insurance, stemming from a double assist via
Jess Leach and
Lorena Lopez to set up Nilsén's fifth score of the year.
Up Next: The Saints continue their three-game road trip with a match at Lander University Saturday, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
