Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Saints score four second-half goals in PBC-opening victory

MORROW, Ga. — Rest did the Flagler College women's soccer team well.

After having a week off, the No. 1-ranked Saints hit the road for their first Peach Belt Conference matchup and left victorious as four different players scored in a 5-1 win over Clayton State University Saturday afternoon at Laker Field.

"Today was a wonderful display of patience and quality from our squad," Flagler head coach Ashley Martin said. "We applied a lot of pressure in the first half, which we felt could prove beneficial going into the second period. After halftime, the team came out with a determination and energy which Clayton was unable to stop. We scored some fantastic goals and looked really dangerous with every attack in the second half."

Of five goals scored, four came in the final 45 minutes while 14 of the Saints' 21 shots (10 on goal) did, as well. Senior Annie Habeeb was responsible for the lone first-half score as she took the pass — via Maria Castorino Mujica and Lorena Lopez — and netted it in the ninth minute for a lead Flagler would never lose.

Right out of halftime, the Saints (4-0-0, 1-0-0 PBC) turned on the jets as three goals came over a four-minute span that Josefine Nilsen and Shannon Matthaei began. Nilsén, the reigning PBC and United Soccer Coaches Player of the Week, netted her fourth goal in three games thanks to the assist from Matthaei in the 48th minute. In just a minute later, Lopez scored her first of the season via Habeeb and Andrea Fernandez, and then the freshman Fernandez got one herself in the 53rd minute to cap the three-goal, four-minute stretch.

Behind a 4-nil lead, Habeeb took a pass from Lauren Feltenberger as the freshman's first collegiate assist gave the senior her fourth goal on the young season. Madison North exited with an unblemished stat line in the 79th minute behind one save as freshman Jasmine Rehberger replaced her and allowed one goal to the Lakers (0-4-1, 0-1-0) in the final 10 minutes played.

Flagler had the advantage in shots (21-12) and cornerkicks (8-4) to remain undefeated this season.

Up Next: The Saints return home for their next PBC matchup as Young Harris College comes to town next Saturday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.
