MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Flagler College men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker Saturday night as Florida Institute of Technology netted a golden goal in overtime to seal the 3-2 win in the Saints' final non-conference match before league play begins.
The Panthers (2-1) got on the board within the first two minutes, but the Saints (1-2) answered in the 35th minute as
Matteo Costa netted his fourth goal — assisted by
Joeran Osland — in two games to get the Saints back in it.
Knotted at 1-all out of halftime, Guillermo Segovia scored again to put Florida Tech in front; however, the Saints weren't far behind. This time, it was
Marc Birkelund with his first Flagler collegiate goal in the 70th minute to tie the score and force overtime.
The Saints out-shot the Panthers 19-16, but Florida Tech had the last say as Segovia scored again to take the win from Flagler in extra minutes.
Up Next: Flagler will open Peach Belt Conference play at Georgia Southwestern Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
