AMERICUS, Ga. — The Flagler College men's soccer team started Peach Belt Conference play on a positive note Wednesday night as the Saints scored a pair of second-half goals to leave Georgia Southwestern University victorious, 2-1.
"Good performance by our team tonight," Flagler head coach
Chris Kranjc said. "Tough conditions against a very good Georgia Southwestern team. We look forward to Saturday now."
It took 60 minutes for either the Saints (2-2, 1-0 PBC) or the Hurricanes (2-2, 0-1) to find the back of the net, but once Flagler did, two came within seven minutes. The first was via — who else than —
Matteo Costa as the Italian footballer took a long ball from keeper
Andrea Lubbia, dribbled upfield and out-ran defenders to stick the pass past the sprinting keeper trying to reach Costa before he shot.
GSW scored the equalizer five minutes after as Nicholas Sciarra hit Chris Salamatou for the score, but the Saints were right on the Canes' heels. This time it was
Joeran Osland and
Marc Birkelund teaming up on a free kick as Osland tapped it over to Birkelund, and then he sent it into the box to
Jed Bowman as he tapped it in for the game-winning goal in the 67th minute.
The Saints will take the positive performance into Saturday's matchup with 20th-ranked Young Harris College at home, beginning at 1 p.m.
