AMERICUS, Ga. – For the second consecutive week, Flagler College pitcher
Kyle Morton (4-4) out-dueled one of the top hurlers in the Peach Belt Conference in a 3-1 win over Georgia Southwestern State University Friday night at Hurricane Field.
Flagler extended its winning streak to seven and improved to 16-20 overall and evened its conference record at 15-15. Georgia Southwestern dropped to 18-20 overall and 15-16 overall.
Morton scattered eight hits and allowed one run in his third complete game of the season. He struck out six and retired another 12 on fly outs and nine more on ground outs. Last week he defeated UNC Pembroke's Bucky Bonynge, who owns the league's best earned run average.
The Saints scored an unearned run in the second inning and then added to the lead when
Jake Kaufman's single to left in the fifth inning drove in
Matthew Burke, who led off the inning with a single.
In the seventh, it was the same combination that produced Flagler's third run. Burke reached first after being hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, and three batters later, Kaufman singled again to left.
Burke collected three singles, scored two runs, and had one run batted in. Kaufman's two singles produced two runs and
Adam Mitchell had the other two hits for the Saints, including a double.
Tucker Smith (4-5), the 2019 PBC Pitcher of the Year, allowed two earned runs on seven hits as he went the distance as well.
Reid Ragsdale hit a triple to right-center to lead off the eighth and scored on a wild pitch for the lone Georgia Southwestern run. Anthony Angelino collected two singles.
Both teams will conclude the season with a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m.
