AMERICUS, Ga. – Flagler College split a season-ending baseball doubleheader with Georgia Southwestern State University Saturday afternoon at Hurricane Stadium. Flagler won the first game 4-2, but lost the second, 1-0.
The Saints concluded the season with a 17-21 overall record and a 16-16 mark in the Peach Belt Conference. Flagler won 8-of-its-last-9 games and finished in seventh place. Georgia Southwestern ended its season with a 19-21 overall record and it went 16-17 in conference play.
In the opener, Flagler got the leadoff batter on base in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, and they all scored.
Jaiden Warde led off the sixth with a walk and came around to score on
Jake Kaufman's single to right-center to break a scoreless tie. Kaufman scored on
Adam Mitchell's single, two batters later.
Ashton Thomas belted his second home run of the season to open the seventh, and that proved to be the game-winning hit. He hit a solo shot over the right field fence.
Kaufman reached on an error to start the eighth and he scored on
Donovan Garcia's single to right to give the Saints a 4-1 lead.
Colt Mink (5-5) scattered six hits and allowed two runs in 7 1-3 innings to earn the win.
Gage Voorhees pocketed his first save after working 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. He came in with runners at first and second with one out and a two-run lead. Voorhees retired the first two batters he faced to stop the threat.
Five different Saints had one hit.
Jared Donalson (4-3) took the loss for the Hurricanes as he surrendered three runs on four hits.
Seven different GSW batters had one hit.
The second game was a pitcher's duel. Aaron Wainright (4-4) tossed seven shutout innings and only allowed five hits for Georgia Southwestern. Nick McCollum and Cole Garrett each tossed an inning in relief. Garrett struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save.
The lone run came in the fifth. Matthew Mamatas led off the inning with a base hit to left and took second on a sacrifice bunt. Later, Hunter Foster plated Mamatas with a double to left-center.
Daniel Fischer (2-2) tied his season-high in strikeouts with five and took the tough loss on the mound. He allowed the one run on four hits.
Nathan Henderson,
Noah Allen, and
Jett Walsh all pitched in relief and did not allow a run or a hit.
Myles Colangelo collected a pair of singles for Flagler.
