Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Flagler sweeps UNCP to finish first half of conference slate undefeated

ST. AUGUSTINE – Logan Garcia recorded a career-high 14 kills and Rebekah Machovec added 10 more as Flagler College swept UNC Pembroke (25-12, 25-19, 25-11) in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler won its seventh match in a row and improved to 9-2 overall and 7-0 in the Peach Belt. UNC Pembroke lost its second match in a row and fell to 3-3 overall and in conference play.

"We had a focus of dominating the server/passer battle, and I thought our serving set the tone for the match from the very beginning," said head coach Matt Affolder. "The entire coaching staff was wowed as I don't know that we have ever put on a display of defense like we saw today. Every player was launching themselves to dig balls, reacting and seeing the ball to extend rallies, and chasing down literally every shot UNC Pembroke threw at us."

Garcia finished with a .522 hitting percentage as she only had two errors on 23 swings and she added three total blocks. Machovec hit .296 with two errors on 27 swings. She tacked on six digs. Jordan Taylor had seven kills and three total blocks and Morgan Hall had a season-best seven kills. Kennedy Muff tallied 37 assists while Karolina Garstka collected a match-high 15 digs and had three aces.

"Karolina, Sarah Kate Thompson, and Edie Lamoreaux were tremendous in the back row and they flat out did not want the ball hitting the floor today," said Affolder. "What really impresses me is our offensive production as we are putting balls away at or above 15 kills per set, and that is due to Kennedy and her ability to reverse the flow and find hitters at any time with the location and tempo they need.  This was a great weekend and exactly the way our team wanted to finish off the first half of PBC play."

Brianna Warren and Kaila Crowder each had five kills for the Braves. Katie Pressley tallied 12 assists while Elise Martin paced the defense with 11 digs.

The Saints jumped ahead of the Braves early in the first set (5-1) and used a 13-3 run to break open a 7-6 advantage. Garcia accounted for six kills and hit .556 in the set. UNCP was held to a -.034 hitting percentage.

The second set saw five ties and four lead changes. A kill by Machovec broke a 14-all tie and the Saints never trailed again. Crowder had five kills and hit .500 for UNC Pembroke.

Flagler hit .350 in the third set with 17 kills and three errors on 40 swings. Machovec had five kills and Garcia added four more.

Up next for Flagler will be a road match against Augusta University on Friday (March 26) at 6 p.m.
