ST. AUGUSTINE – Young Harris College used a pair of six-run outbursts to sweep a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from Flagler College, 10-3 and 9-1, Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Young Harris evened its overall record to 6-6 and improved to 6-5 in the Peach Belt. Flagler is now 5-10 overall and 4-6 in conference play.
In the sixth inning in the opener, the Mountain Lions sent 10 men to the plate and scored six runs on seven hits to break open a 4-3 game. Cole Jackson and Ethan Underwood each hit a two-run double.
Chad Brown (2-1) scattered nine hits and allowed two earned runs over 7 2/3 innings of work to earn the win. He struck out five batters.
Jackson Jones paced the 15-hit Mountain Lion attack with three singles and he scored a run. Noah Fitzgerald collected two singles, scored a run, and had two runs batted in. Dahlton Cash went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.
Jake Kaufman hit a solo home run in the third inning while
Matthew Burke and
Adam Mitchell hit RBI singles in the fifth.
Zach Audet (0-3) allowed four runs on five hits in five innings of work.
Jett Walsh tossed four scoreless innings in relief with five strikeouts.
In the second game, Young Harris sent 10 men to the plate and scored six runs on five hits in the fourth inning. T.J. Byrd had a pinch-hit two-run single in the frame while Jones and Mark Castle hit RBI singles.
Cole Edwards (1-1) tossed complete game as he scattered six hits and allowed just one run. He struck out six batters. Edwards induced 13 fly outs and eight more ground outs.
Fitzgerald finished with two singles and he scored two runs. Cash collected a pair of singles, scored a run, and drove in another.
Kyle Morton (1-3) took the loss on the hill for Flagler. He surrendered eight runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. Morton tied his career high for strikeouts with nine.
Mitchell hit a pair of singles and scored Flagler's lone run.
The same two teams will meet in the final game of the series tomorrow (March 14) at noon.
