ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The final tune-up before Peach Belt Conference play didn't finish as the No. 9 Flagler College men's tennis team had hoped as the Saints fell to visiting Washburn University at the Flagler Tennis Center Wednesday, 6-1.
"Today, we took another tough loss," Flagler head coach
Thomas Hipp said. "We lost the second doubles quickly, but also won the third doubles almost as quickly, so it came down to the No. 1 doubles, which we lost close in the tie break. "We started well in the singles, having momentum but could not convert into wins. Nikita (Tatyanin) was the only highlight on our side. We need to bounce back versus Augusta on Friday in our conference opener."
The Saints (2-5) will begin Peach Belt Conference play this weekend with a pair of home matches. The first being Friday against Augusta University and the next on Saturday versus Georgia College as both contests will begin at 1 p.m.
Flagler was in the match more than the final score indicates; however, the home team wasn't able to seal the deal. In doubles, the Jonsson brothers lost a heartbreaker late as it handed Washburn (6-1) the clinching point.
Rasmus Jonsson and
William Jonsson used that tough loss to push them early in singles, winning the first set but then each lost the next two. Those No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively, came after the Ichabods had already clinched the match with their win on the No. 3 court.
After the Washburn clinch,
Nikita Tatyanin kept his winning streak flowing as the reigning PBC Player of the Week won his match in tie-breaking fashion for his fourth consecutive victory.
