Saints ninth inning rally falls short

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College trailed by five runs going into the bottom of the ninth and rallied to score three runs, but couldn't push across anymore in a 6-4 loss to Missouri Southern State University in a non-conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.

Missouri Southern swept the season opening three-game series. Flagler (0-3) will look to break into the win column next weekend in a Peach Belt Conference series at Georgia Southwestern State University.

The Saints started the home half of the ninth with back-to-back singles from Jaiden Warde and Sam Freedman. Ashton Thomas followed with a two-run double to center field, but was caught in a rundown trying to advance to third. A walk and a double, by Jake Kaufman, put two more runners in scoring position.

The Lions turned to Scott Duensing to close out the game. He got Matthew Burke to hit a sacrifice fly to right, which scored a run, and then got the next batter to ground out to end the game for his first save of the season.

Missouri Southern hit six home runs in the first two games, and they added three more this afternoon. Matt Miller and Henry Kusiak went back-to-back in the fourth and Grant Harris hit a solo shot in the seventh.

Dexter Swims' RBI-single and Tommy Stevenson's RBI-double in the top of the ninth gave the Lions just enough insurance.

Zach Parish (1-0) scattered three hits and allowed one run over five innings. He struck out six batters.

Troy Gagan went 3-for-4 with a double and one run batted in. Swims singled twice, scored a run, and drove in another while Joe Kinder finished with a single, a double, and he scored a run.

Kyle Morton (0-1) allowed four runs on two hits in four innings for Flagler. He fanned five batters. Jett Walsh struck out six in 3 1/3 innings.

Adam Mitchell went 2-for-4 with a double and Freedman collected two single and scored a run.
