Flagler loses pair in conference opener to Columbus State

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College lost both games of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader to Columbus State University, 6-5 and 6-4, Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.

Flagler is now 0-5 on the season and 0-2 in the Peach Belt. Columbus State played its first two game of the season.

In the opener, the Saints scored four times in the third inning to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Chase Carney hit a two-run single to start the spurt.

The Cougars pushed across two runs in the fourth and then erupted for a four-run sixth to take the lead.

Steven Minter's RBI double in the sixth tied the game at 4-all and then scored the go-ahead run on Matthew McDade's single.

Tyler Cadenhead (1-0) earned the win in relief as he tossed 2 1/3 hitless innings. Brady Kais closed the final inning to earn the save.

Dane Bullock collected two singles and scored a run while Colby Brabston went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and one run batted in.

Zach Audet (0-2) picked up the loss in relief for the Saints. He allowed three runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Adam Mitchell had three of Flagler's seven hits. He hit a triple and drove in a run.

The second game was very similar to the first in that Flagler pushed across four runs, all in the second inning. Jaiden Warde had the big hit of the inning with a two-run single to give the Saints a 2-1 lead.

The Cougars had single tallies in the second, third, fourth, fifth, eighth, and ninth innings.

Will Wilbanks led off the eighth inning for the Cougars with a double to center field and pinch runner Seth Nelson later scored on a sacrifice fly to break the 4-all tie.

Noah Windhorst (1-0) tossed three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win.

Brooks went 3-for-4 with a triple and two solo home runs.

Kyle Morton (0-2) worked four innings in relief and surrendered one earned run on three hits as he took the loss. He did strike out five batters.

Matthew Burke went 2-for-4 with a double and he scored a run.

Flagler hosts Valdosta State University on Tuesday (Feb. 23) at 5 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
