COLUMBUS, Ga. — The matchup between the top-two preseason Peach Belt Conference teams didn't disappoint Sunday afternoon.
The stats were even across the board as the Flagler College women's soccer team recorded 26 shots to Columbus State University's 24 in a double-overtime, 1-1, draw at the Walden Soccer Complex in Columbus, Georgia.
"Today was a very open game, with two teams that were aggressive and adventurous," Flagler head coach
Ashley Martin said. "We feel somewhat disappointed to leave without the victory, but the players put in a great effort and fought extremely hard."
Of the 26 shots for the Saints (2-0-1, 1-0-1 PBC), 14 were on goal with one coming via the foot of
Jess Leach for her second collegiate goal. In the 36th minute, the freshman took a pass from fellow rookie
Emery Biggs in the box and put it away to put Flagler on the board.
Maria Castorino Mujica led the Saints with six shots, while
Sara Sandberg had five (three on goal) and
Annie Habeeb had two of her four shots on goal. All four of Leach's shots were on target.
The Cougars' keeper Bria Riancho saved 13 total shots, with eight coming in the second half to keep Flagler off the board and force double-OT. In the 62nd minute, CSU (2-0-1, 2-0-1 ) knotted the score for good when Maddy Peterson found Rachael Sweigard for her first goal of the season.
Of Flagler goalkeeper
Sarah-Lisa Dubel's nine saves, four came in the combined 20-minute overtime periods to preserve the draw. The Saints had fours shots (one on goal) through the two OT periods.
