OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Rasmus Jonsson was tremendous for the Flagler College men's tennis team in the final match of the ITA National Indoor Championship at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center Sunday.
The senior clinched the point in both doubles and singles to lead the third-seeded, No. 9 Saints over eighth-seeded, No. 22 Midwestern State University, 4-0.
"Today we finally won our first D2 match of the season," Flagler head coach
Thomas Hipp said. "I hope it will stimulate some confidence for the upcoming matches. We won the doubles point in a very close doubles, the opponent had two match points at 5-6 and we held and got into a tie break to win 8:6. The close doubles win gave us momentum for the singles and the top 3 flights won. Rasmus, our senior, clinched both singles and doubles."
The duo of
Rodrigo Carvalho/
Philipp Lemken secured the first doubles win as the Jonsson brothers (Rasmus/
William Jonsson) rallied to clinch the doubles point. The No. 9-ranked Saints (1-3) used that energy and put it into doubles, starting with Carvalho's straight-set win followed by
Nikita Tatyanin's in the third set.
Rasmus Jonsson clinched the third to lead the Saints as they leave Oklahoma with a win over the Mustangs (0-3).
Up Next: Flagler will be back in action with a home match versus Norwood University at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6, followed by rematch with Delta State University the next day at noon Sunday.
