ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Three Flagler College women's soccer players recorded their first goals of the season Sunday as the Saints took a one-goal halftime lead and turned it into a 3-0 Peach Belt Conference-opening win over Francis Marion University at Saints Field.
"The team played very well today, and created a lot of good chances," Flagler women's head soccer coach
Ashley Martin said. "Huge credit goes to Francis Marion. They fought extremely hard and made the game difficult for us."
The Saints (2-0, 1-0 PBC) kept the shots coming, firing 33 shots with 19 on goal to keep Patriot goalkeeper Makayla Willets busy all afternoon. The keeper saved 16 and kept Flagler from scoring on multiple occasions to keep Francis Marion close for sometime.
In the 13th minute,
Chloe Byrne was able to sneak one past Willets as
Annie Habeeb found her, and then the junior from Maryland finished with a shot up and past Willets. The Saints were held in check until just after half when it took
Jess Leach 45 seconds to give the home team a cushion.
Again, it was Habeeb with the assist as the freshman collected the pass and placed the goal through the middle of the net for the 2-0 lead. Francis Marion (1-3, 1-3 PBC) had seven shots on goal, while Flagler goalkeeper
Sarah-Lisa Dubel corralled their three shots on goal for the clean sheet.
Maria Castorino Mujica led Flagler with nine shots as eight were on goal, and
Josefine Nilsen matched those nine shots with five of hers being on goal.
Castorino Mujica was responsible for the Saints' final goal after a penalty was called in the box with the 70th minute approaching. The forward placed the PK in the right corner to cap the scoring at Saints Field.
"Makayla Willets (their goalkeeper) had a great match, and was incredibly difficult to beat," Martin said. "We are very happy to start our PBC play with a victory and a clean sheet."
