GREENWWOD, S.C. –
Jaizec Lottie scored 29 of his game-high 36 points in the second half and overtime to help rally No. 18 (NABC Division II Top 25) Flagler College past Lander University 98-91 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Finis Horne Arena.
Flagler extended its winning streak to nine to improve to 11-2 overall and 9-1 in the Peach Belt. This is the longest win streak in the program's history since a 17-game run during the 2003-04 season. Lander dropped to 6-8 overall and 4-6 in conference play.
"I give a lot of credit to Lander and its game plan," said head coach
Chad Warner. "We were really out of sorts all night. Our guys hung in there and made big plays late to give ourselves a chance."
The Saints trailed by 13 (46-33) at the half, and by as many as 16 in the second half. Flagler used a 19-3 run to close regulation play and
Chase Fiddler's three-pointer from the left corner as time expired tied the game at 85.
Lottie and
Jalen Barr had two early layups in the extra session and the Saints never looked back. Flagler knocked down 7-of-8 from the free throw line in overtime as Lottie made all four and
Derrick Ellis, Jr. converted 3-of-4.
Lottie has scored 30 or more points six times this year and he equaled his previous season-high in points (36 at North Florida, Dec. 19). He made 11-of-20 from the field and 11-of-13 from the free throw line. Lottie also added seven assists, four steals, and four rebounds.
Ellis added 15 points for the Saints while
Chris Metzger contributed 14 points and six rebounds. Barr came off the bench to provide 11 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
Flagler forced Lander into 21 turnovers and converted those into 31 points. The Saints enjoyed a 40-22 advantage in points in the paint.
"I am really happy for our team, but I know we have to be much better in order to sustain success," said Warner.
Deon Berrien led the Bearcats with 24 points and 10 rebounds in a reserve role. Jared Sherfield added 15 points while Zane Rankin tacked on 14 points and seven rebounds. DaJuan Moorer chipped in with 12 points, eight rebounds, and he blocked four shots.
The same two teams meet again on Monday at Flagler Gymnasium at 6 p.m.
