ANDERSON, S.C. –
Jaizec Lottie scored a game-high 25 points and added six assists as No. 2 (NABC Division II Top 25) Flagler College fell short in the season opener to Anderson University of South Carolina 80-77 in a Southeast Region Crossover Tournament game Friday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center.
"I was disappointed with our response to adversity tonight," said head coach
Chad Warner. "I thought Anderson played extremely tough and with a greater urgency than we did. We have to play with much greater urgency moving forward and I think the guys will respond."
Flagler trailed by 12 (18-6) early, but the remainder of the game was back-and-forth featuring 14 ties and 10 lead changes.
The Saints held a 39-38 lead at the half behind Lottie's 12 points and
Curtis Lewis added 10 more.
With just under three minutes left in the game, a steal by Lewis led to a transition layup by Lottie tying the score at 72. But Parker Dortch's put-back of a missed three-pointer, the next time down the court, gave the Trojans the lead for good.
Dortch and Quinn Nottingham each scored 18 points for Anderson, a member of the South Atlantic Conference. Jalen Hillery recorded a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Trojans made 76 percent (19-25) of their free throw attempts and were led by Nottingham's 9-of-10.
Lewis finished with 16 points as he made 6-of-7 from the field, including three 3-pointers.
Jalen Barr notched a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Saints shot 52 percent (13-25) from the free throw line.
Flagler takes on Southern Wesleyan University tomorrow at 1 p.m. to wrap up the tournament. The Warriors defeated Lander University 83-78 in the other game in the tournament.
