Saints, Eagles' tussle ends in draw

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Gritty.

It was the perfect word to describe the performance displayed at the ERAU Soccer Stadium Wednesday night as the Flagler College women's soccer team and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University tussled until the 110th minute, resulting in the non-conference 2-2 draw.

"Today saw two very good teams go toe-to-toe with a tie being a fair result," Flagler head coach Ashley Martin said. "Both teams capitalized on set pieces and pushed each other until the last second. I'm proud of our performance today and couldn't have asked for more going into the next game on Sunday."

The No. 17-ranked Saints (6-1-1) were eager to hit the pitch following a negative result Saturday and it showed from the get-go. In the 23rd minute, Josefine Nilsen netted her team-leading sixth goal of the season — via a through ball from Andrea Fernandez — as the Swede dribble up and past the keeper for the 1-0 lead.

It was a lead Flagler held until the 55th minute when Embry-Riddle, who received votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, and Ragnheidur Gardarsdo scored the equalizer. The score stayed knotted up until the 80th minute thanks to a perfectly-placed Fernandez corner kick that found a leaping Annie Habeeb as she extended and got just enough on the ball to see it gradually roll over the white line to take the lead.

The Eagles (4-3-1) edged the Saints in shots with 13-to-9, but of those, Flagler had five on goal to Embry-Riddle's six. One of those came for the Eagles four minutes removed from Habeeb's goal as Savannah Sheahan scored the equalizer that remained in the 85th minute.

Up Next: Flagler will return to PBC play Sunday with a visit from No. 2-ranked Columbus State University, beginning at 4 p.m.
