ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — In a matchup that never disappoints, Sunday afternoon wasn't any different.
The result came down to the final minutes as Flagler College and Columbus State University swapped three-goal halves, with the second-ranked Cougars edging the 17th-ranked Saints, 4-3, in the Peach Belt Conference match at Saints Field.
Anna Grady scored the first and last goal for CSU (11-0-1, 5-0-0 PBC) as the first came in the 13th minute and the game winner was in the 87th minute. After the Cougars took the early lead, the Saints (6-2-1, 3-2-0) roared back with consecutive goals as
Andrea Fernandez netted the first and
Josefine Nilsen followed with one of her own a minute later at the 17-minute mark.
With Fernandez's sixth goal of the season, it began the Saints' three-goal half as she assisted on Nilsen's team-leading seventh goal to take the lead.
Emery Biggs netted the final first-half goal, taking the rebounded shot and sticking it home for her second-career score in a Flagler kit and the 3-1 halftime lead.
The Saints out-shot the Cougars 13-6 in the first half and 21-14 overall; however, CSU had one more shot on goal (nine). To begin the second half, the Cougars inserted Lizzie Hedrick in goal — replacing Sara Halilhodzic —and she was able to haul in a pair of saves to quiet the fiery Saints' attack.
Meanwhile, CSU was able to cash in on their chances — with Parker Morgan and Emma Beddow scoring— to put Grady in position at the end and halt Flagler's chances.
Up Next: The Saints step outside of conference play with a visit to Florida Southern Wednesday at 7 p.m.
