Women's soccer keeps winning behind fifth straight shutout

TAMPA, Fla. — The 20th-ranked Flagler women's soccer team is heating up at the right time. For the fifth straight match, the Saints left victorious while shutting out their opponent as they blanked the University of Tampa in a non-conference, 2-0, victory Wednesday night.

"This win was an absolute battle," Flagler head coach Ashley Martin said. "We showed real grit and determination to not only win the game, but to not concede any goals. Madison (North) had a tremendous performance in goal and came up big when her team needed it.

"Everyone sacrificed themselves for the team, and combined with some quality play, we were a formidable team tonight."

Over the five-match winning streak, the Saints (11-2-1) have outscored their opponents 19-0. Goalkeeper Madison North keeps leading Flagler, registering her fourth clean sheet of the season to put her at a 0.79 goals against average and keep the positive momentum flowing.

The Saints dominated the shots with 19 to the Spartans' nine, including 12 on goal to four for Tampa (7-6-1). Maria Castorino Mujica was responsible for the first goal, netting her second in as many games thanks to a free kick outside the box that the senior sent past the keeper in the 17th minute.

Then at the 70th-minute mark, Liz Hall out-hustled the keeper and defenders in the box as she extended and headed a ball as it bounced into the net for an insurance goal and her first of the season.

Flagler will aim to keep the wins rolling with a regular-season home finale versus Georgia College Saturday at 1 p.m.
