LAKELAND, Fla. — Much needed.
The Flagler College women's soccer team got back to its winning ways Wednesday night as
Brin Wexler scored in the 52nd minute, and
Madison North protected the lead, to propel the Saints in a 1-nil victory over Florida Southern College at the Barnett Athletic Complex.
"In the first half, we applied continual pressure on Florida Southern, and got a lot of balls into their box," Flagler head coach
Ashley Martin said. "Although we didn't get the break through, we knew that eventually our pressure would pay off.
"Brin connected with a good ball across from Hannah (Dolores) to finally break the deadlock. The team showed maturity in how they saw out the game, and this victory gives us a great boost going into a big PBC matchup at UNG."
As Martin alluded to, the win put the Saints (7-2-1) back on the right track and now they turn their attention to 22nd-ranked North Georgia in a conference road clash Saturday at 2 p.m.
Flagler dominated the Mocs (4-6-1) in attack all night, firing off 17 shots to their eight with 10 of those being on goal to Florida Southern's five. The Saints finally knocked the egg off the scoreboard seven minutes out of a scoreless first half when
Hannah Dolores found Wexler in the box, placing the ball perfectly for a one-timer goal into the left corner to put the Saints up for good.
It was Wexler's third goal of the season, while it was Dolores' second assist to put the Saints in the driver's seat. Flagler's lead was threatened in the 71st minute when the Mocs were awarded a penalty kick; however, North made a tremendous save as she drove to her left and swatted the potential equalizer away.
It was one of five saves for the Saints' keeper and marked her second-career clean sheet and second shutout of the season.
