Berglin’s double-double and Garcia breaks block record in win at Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Jordan Berglin posted her first double-double with 18 kills and 19 digs while Logan Garcia broke Flagler College's total block record with 12 in a 3-1 (25-15, 25-18, 26-28, 27-25) victory over Augusta University in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Friday night at the Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Flagler won its fourth match in a row and improved to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the PBC. The Saints also won their first match in Augusta since Sept. 29, 2017. Augusta drops to 11-4 and 2-1 in conference play.

Berglin blew past her season highs in kills (11) and digs (7). Her 18 kills was the most by a freshman since Karlie Redfern's 18 vs. Georgia College, Oct. 21, 2017. Berglin was also part of Flagler's block party tonight with five of her own. The Saints' 18.0 team blocks are the most since Dec. 6, 2013, when the school record of 21.0 were recorded against Armstrong State University. Garcia broke the program's single-match record, which was previously 11 and was held by Sara Davis (Sept. 12, 2014) and Kelly Boese (Oct. 16, 2007). She had 11 block assists and that tied the program record held by Boese.

Rachel Machovec finished with her seventh double-double of the season with 11 kills and 18 digs. Kennedy Muff posted her fifth double-double with 34 assists and 16 digs, which tied a season-best. Rebekah Machovec contributed 17 digs and six block assists.

Alyssa Frazier led Augusta with 10 kills while Kyle Martin recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 21 digs. Martin, however, was limited to a -.039 hitting percentage. Samantha Zittrauer added 24 assists and 12 digs.

A Rachel Machovec kill in the first set sparked a 4-0 spurt to give the Saints some separation. The lead would balloon to 21-13 and ended with three consecutive hitting errors by Jaguars, one of which was blocked. Rachel Machovec had five kills and hit .417 in the set. Augusta was held to a -.026 hitting percentage.

A 7-2 run in the second set helped Flagler cruise to a win. Brooke Singleton had back-to-back aces in the spurt. Berglin had seven kills and six digs as well as a .333 hitting percentage.

The third set saw 14 ties and eight lead changes between the two teams. Flagler fought off the first set point (24-23) with a kill by Berglin. A kill by Rachel Machovec denied set point (25-24) for Augusta again. Flagler led 26-25 but kills by Alexis Diaz-Infante and Radka Brichackova gave the Jags set point again. A Flagler hitting error forced a fourth set.

Augusta fended off two match points, but Rachel Machovec ended it with a spike to give Flagler a hard-fought 27-25 win. Berglin led the Saints with six kills while Frazier led the Jaguars with five.

Flagler continues its road trip with another conference match tomorrow (Oct. 2) against Georgia College at 3 p.m.
