Saints rally past Lakers, 70-69

MORROW, Ga. – Jaziana Mathis scored a career-high 25 points, 14 of which came in the second quarter alone, to help rally Flagler College past Clayton State University 70-69 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at The Loch.

Flagler halted a four-game losing streak and improved to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the Peach Belt. Clayton State had its four-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 5-2 overall and in conference play.

"This was a great team win against a really tough Clayton State team," said head coach Mo Smith. "I am proud of our ladies' fight today. I thought we were a little sluggish early, but they did a great job of climbing back into the ball game to end the half. I'm really proud of how we finished the game."

The Saints used hot shooting in the second and third quarters in knocking off the Lakers. Flagler shot 60 percent in the second quarter and 64.3 percent in the third. The Saints outscored the Lakers 44-31 in those two periods.

Flagler trailed by as many as 12 early in the second quarter, but closed with a 19-7 run to knot the game at 33 at the half. The lead went back and forth in the third quarter, but the Saints led by as many as six late in the quarter before settling for a 55-50 lead after 30 minutes.

A short jumper by Tori Pearce with 7:06 left to go in the game gave Flagler the lead for good (60-59).

However, the Lakers closed to within one point (70-69) with 51 seconds left after Jessica Maye sank a pair of free throws.

A steal by Jessie Poole with 22 seconds left gave Clayton State an opportunity to win the game. After a timeout with 14 seconds to go, the Lakers had two chances to score inside the paint, but time ran out.

Mathis also posted career-highs in field goals made (11) and attempted (21). Pearce added 14 points, a career-high five steals, and four assists. Monique Bryant did a little bit of everything with career-high in points (14), rebounds (8), assists (8), and steals (4). N'Mya Pierce grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Flagler forced Clayton State into 23 turnovers which led to 35 points.

Audrey McElhaney led the Lakers with 25 points and eight rebounds.

Flagler remains on the road as it will visit USC Aiken on Wednesday (Feb. 3).

NOTE: Flagler snapped a five-game losing streak vs. Clayton State.
