ST. AUGUSTINE –
Tori Pearce and
Jaziana Mathis each scored 18 points, but that would not be enough as Flagler College fell in overtime to Georgia Southwestern State University 68-65 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Georgia Southwestern improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the Peach Belt. Flagler is now 2-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
"This was a hard-fought game between both teams," said
Mo Smith. "Kudos to Georgia Southwestern as they made key plays down the stretch and we did not. We had our opportunities, but we couldn't capitalize. This was a great game to learn and grow from."
Flagler had built up a 14-point lead (44-30) after a Pearce layup and held a 44-35 edge after three quarters of play.
The Saints led by as many as 11 (54-43) in the fourth quarter, but the Lady 'Canes went on a 15-4 run to tie the game at 58 and force overtime. Jaleah Storr scored six of GSW's points in that spurt, including sinking the first of two free throws with 13 seconds left to force the extra session. Georgia Southwestern outscored Flagler 23-14 in the fourth quarter.
In overtime, the Lady 'Canes reeled off the first five points, but the Saints were able to tie the game at 65 on a three-pointer by Mathis with 42 seconds left.
However, Lex Chatman sank a three-pointer with 18 seconds left to give GSW the lead.
Pearce missed a trey with nine seconds left and the Lady 'Canes corralled the rebound.
Storr finished with a game-high 29 points on 11-of-24 shooting from the field. She sank five 3-pointers. Chatman recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Kayla Grant gathered a game-high 13 rebounds.
Mathis made 4-of-6 from three-point range for the Saints.
Sadie Russell added 10 points and five assists.
Marta Franco finished with eight points, five rebounds, and four steals.
N'Mya Pierce grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Flagler hosts Lander University on Wednesday (Jan. 27) at Flagler Gymnasium.
