Flagler women nearly upset Lander

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College held a nine-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but Lander University used a 16-5 run to rally to a 79-74 win in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

Lander remains undefeated at 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler is now 2-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

"I thought we played well most of the game against an outstanding and well-coached Lander team," said head coach Mo Smith. "We just didn't capitalize on some late looks in the offensive end late. I am proud of our ladies' effort and fight."

Zamiya Passmore scored eight of the Bearcats 16 points in that run and her 10-foot jumper with 1:05 left in the game gave Lander its first lead since the midway point of the third quarter. Flagler led the game for 35:38.

Makaila Cange made a pair of layups with under 14 seconds left to clinch the game for the Bearcats.

Lander outscored Flagler 22-8 in the fourth quarter and shot 60 percent from the field. The Saints shot 20 percent in the final quarter.

Flagler used a 10-2 run in the third quarter, capped by a three-pointer by Tori Pearce, for their largest lead of the game (66-53).

N'Mya Pierce recorded her third double-double of the season with 21 points and 13 rebounds, both team-highs. Pearce added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Sadie Russell chipped in with 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Jaziana Mathis tallied 12 points.

Passmore led the Bearcats with a game-high 25 points, and she dished out six assists. Cange recorded a double-double with 22 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Amiaya Melvins finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Lander held a 48-26 edge in scoring in the paint and grabbed 13 offensive rebounds which led to 19 second chance points.

Up next for Flagler is a road game at Clayton State University at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Morrow, Georgia.
