ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — It's always the little things that make the biggest difference.
Right now, more than ever, that aspect of life holds true. It's why weekly "Zoom" meetings have been so meaningful to the Flagler College women's soccer team since all classes and human interaction were moved online, due to coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns.
"We'll get through this as a team," freshman defender
Gabi Flores said. "We look forward to having the Zoom meetings, which is kind of weird to say, but just seeing each other is just something we really enjoy and need to get through this."
Add in a surprise with the already excitement of virtually seeing each other, and you'll get a surreal reaction. So, that's what head coach
Ashley Martin did Monday.
After splitting up into breakout rooms to discuss what each player missed about being together as a group, Team Impact player
Savannah Lahtinen popped into the chat and was waiting for the student-athletes to bounce back into the main screen.
"It was actually really funny because we were in these different rooms together and as we came back as a whole team, she was there and everybody's face — they were so happy," Flores said. "We all were like 'Savannah, oh my gosh, hey!' It was one after another, just welcoming her back, talking to her and asking her how she has been.
"Everybody was super excited to see her. She brightens up everyone's day."
Savannah's surprise was the perfect ending to the Saints' third virtual meeting that included an update from
Matt Green, Flagler College's Senior Associate AD/Internal Operations, and some positional group tactical analysis clips from film homework.
Oh, and there were some riddles, which were sparked by an idea from athletic trainer
Kali Chaplin for cool down sessions during this past season and have been led by freshman goalkeeper
Nadia Fung.
"One of the things the team discussed they missed the most was positive energy and vibes we would get from each other everyday," Martin said. "A huge part of this Zoom meeting idea is for us to just be positive with each other and try to put a positive spin on what is a very negative situation. I've reached out to a lot of them and asked what they thought of the meetings, and they actually really enjoy the meetings and look forward to it because they love making fun of one of other on there and you are always guaranteed some silly comments — they look forward to that.
"It's like a weekly dose of positivity in a very negative situation."
These meetings have allowed the student-athletes to step away from all that's going on in the outside world by just soaking in and enjoying each other's company. It's been a comforting escape channel for a team that had its share of positive moments this past season.
Those memories of winning its first Peach Belt Conference Tournament title, Southeast Region title and earning a Final Four appearance, following a 23-1-1 season, have the Saints looking forward to the future and has their spirits high as usual.
"Staying positive is just something our team does," Flores said. "I think we are looking forward to our next season together when fall comes. We are staying positive together, focusing on us, doing our workouts, school, and doing everything to be a better us and bettering ourselves. We are doing everything to stay positive towards each other, giving our whole team motivation, and motivating each other through these hard times together."
