ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The sunny day at the Flagler Tennis Center mirrored the play of the No. 12-ranked Flagler women's tennis team as the Saints ran away with a convincing 6-1 win over Lander to begin Peach Belt Conference action.
"We came out very strong for our first conference match today," Flagler women's tennis head coach
Rodrigo Puebla said. "The girls showed great team spirit and support throughout the whole match.
"It was very important to start with a good win into conference today, and we will keep up the hard work for the upcoming matches."
The Saints (4-3, 1-0 PBC) will step back out of conference play Tuesday by welcoming Concordia for a 3 p.m. match start at the Flagler Tennis Center.
In doubles, the duo of
Anika Nissen/
Lixin Wang got Flagler churning with a 6-1 victory, and then
Paloma Martinez/
Amelie Vossgaetter solidified it with a 6-0 sweep to put the Saints up early.
From there, Flagler won five of six singles matches as No. 14-ranked
Eden Schlagenhauf, No. 36 Wang, Vossgaetter,
Florencia Massardo Brain and
Alessandra Traub all won their respective matches in straight sets to hand Lander (5-3, 1-1) its first conference loss.
