ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College designated hitter
J.T. Marr ripped a triple to the right-center field wall to plate
Connor Laspina with two outs in the bottom of the ninth for the only run of the game in a Peach Belt Conference opener against Georgia Southwestern State University Friday night at Drysdale Field.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Laspina hit a line drive at third baseman Tyler Skelton who just got a piece of his glove on the smash for a base hit. The next batter, Marr, worked the count to 2-2 against Hurricane reliever Harrison Timberlake (0-1) and then got the game-winning hit. Marr finished the game 2-for-4.
The game was a pitcher's duel between each team's starters – Tucker Smith of Georgia Southwestern and
Nathan Henderson of Flagler. Neither factored in the decision.
Henderson tossed 5 2/3 innings for Flagler (8-0 overall, 1-0 PBC) struck out a season-best 10 batters. He nearly doubled his strikeout tally from the previous two outings. Henderson allowed an infield single in the fourth inning after retiring 11 of the game's first 13 hitters.
Smith, the PBC Pitcher of the Year in 2019, scattered four hits over 7 2/3 innings of work. He walked three and fanned seven.
Ethan Jones (2-0) earned his second win in relief as he tossed 3 1/3 innings, allowed one hit, and struck out two batters.
Aaron Anderson,
Adam Mitchell, and
John Fiorenza had the other hits for the Saints.
Hunter Foster hit a double and Miguel Urbina added a single for Georgia Southwestern (1-6, 0-1).
The same two teams will play tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
NOTE: Flagler is off to its best start in the Dave Barnett era with an 8-0 record...This was Flagler's second walk-off win.
