Fiorenza belts 2-run home run as Saints stun No. 4 Mules

HOUSTON, Texas – John Fiorenza belted an 0-2 pitch over the left wall in the ninth inning to lead Flagler College to a 4-2 season opening win over No. 4 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Preseason Top 40) University of Central Missouri at the Houston Winter Invitational at Minute Maid Park Friday night.

Sean Lawlor led off the ninth for Flagler with a single to left. That chased Central Missouri reliever Cole Young (0-1) from the game.

Chase Plymell came in to keep the game tied and retired the first two batters he face. Fiorenza followed with his shot to left.

Zach Audet (1-0), who came in relief for the Saints in the eighth, allowed a leadoff infield single in the ninth, but retired the next batter on a pop up to Aaron Anderson at first base and then got Harrison Schumacher to line into a double play to end the game. He lined out to left field and Brennan vanBreusegen was caught off of first base.

The first 12 Flagler batters in the game were retired in order, but the Saints pushed across single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings. Anderson's RBI single to right in the sixth gave Flagler a 2-1 lead.

Central Missouri tied the game in the bottom of the eighth when Dusty Stroup hit a shot back to the mound where Saints reliever Ethan Jones was able to knock down, but that allowed John Prudhom to score from third base.

Fiorenze went 2-for-4 with the home run and three runs batted in. Lawlor hit a single, a double, and scored two runs.

Nathan Henderson tossed four innings and struck out six.

Erik Webb and Josh Schumacher each collected two hits for the Mules.

Flagler will take on No. 24 University of Arkansas at Monticello tomorrow at 5 p.m. (Central) at Houston.
