HOUSTON, Texas –
Connor Laspina's two-run double in the ninth inning broke a three-all tie as Flagler College knocked off No. 24 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Preseason Top 40) University of Arkansas-Monticello 6-3 at the Houston Winter Invitational Saturday night at Minute Maid Park.
With one out in the ninth,
Sean Lawlor drew a walk and then took third on
Adam Mitchell's double that hugged the third base line. Two batters later, Laspina hit his double off the left field wall to plate both Lawlor and Mitchell.
Josh Shrouder followed Laspina with a single to center, and Laspina was able to score to put Flagler (2-0) ahead 6-3.
Blake Hooker (1-0) working in his second inning of relief work, issued a walk to start the ninth, but retired the next three batters in a row. He struck out five of the seven batters he faced to earn the win.
Flagler scored two runs in the seventh to take a 3-1 lead, but Arkansas-Monticello plated two unearned runs in the home half of the inning.
The Saints finished with 16 hits in the game.
Jake Kaufman collected three singles and scored a run while
Aaron Anderson went 3-for-5 with a double and he scored a run.
UAM (0-2) was limited to just three hits. Andrew Piriano hit an RBI double in the first inning and Dylan Borman hit a double and scored a run in the seventh.
Erik Key (0-1) took the loss in relief for the Weevils. He allowed three runs on four hits in two innings of work.
Flagler closes out the tournament tomorrow with Arkansas Tech at 11 a.m. Eastern.
