ST. AUGUSTINE –
Sara Sandberg scored two goals and assisted on another as No. 8 (United Soccer Coaches Division II) Flagler College rolled to a 5-1 victory over Young Harris College in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.
The Saints improved to 6-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Peach Belt. Young Harris dropped to 1-5-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
"We started the match extremely well today," said head coach
Ashley Martin. "It was important for us to get an early goal. I though we showed good control for the majority of the game and was happy to see us score five quality goals."
Sandberg scored her two goals nine minutes apart from one another in the first half. Her first tally came in the 20
th minute when she converted on a give-and-go with
Charlene Nowotny to give the Saints a 3-0 lead. In the 29
th minute, Sandberg cleaned up
Concepcion Sanchez's initial shot that hit the crossbar.
Annie Habeeb got Flagler on the board just 1-minute, 32-seconds into the match.
Lorena Lopez sent in a cross to the left to Habeeb who went on to score.
Nowotny scored a goal and added two assists.
Maria Castorino Mujica capped the scoring with a goal in the 77
th minute.
Lailah Muscat got the Mountain Lions on the board with her goal in the 65
th minute.
Sarah-Lisa Dubel recorded two saves for Flagler while Pien Van Kampen recorded nine saves for Young Harris.
The Saints out-shot the Mountain Lions 26-5 and had a 14-3 disparity in shots on goal.
Flagler visits Columbus State on Wednesday (Oct. 2) at 1 p.m.
