SAINT LEO, Fla. –
Brin Wexler scored her first collegiate goal and
Sara Sandberg followed with her team-best sixth tally as No. 8 (United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll) Flagler College blanked Saint Leo University 2-0 in on non-conference women's soccer match Wednesday night at the Saint Leo Soccer Field.
The win moves Flagler to 5-0-0 on the season, good enough for the best start in the 24-year history of the women's soccer program. Saint Leo fell to 3-3-1.
The Saints needed less than 20 minutes to take control against the Lions.
Wexler put the Saints on the board in the 19th minute with her first career goal, which came off an assist from
Lorena Lopez.
After a back-and-forth start to the second half, Sandberg put the game away in the 76th minute, taking a feed from
Charlene Nowotny and slotting her attempt past Lions' keeper Julia Ortiz for the final 2-0 Flagler advantage.
Flagler posted its fourth shutout behind another solid effort from goalkeeper
Sarah-Lisa Dubel. The junior recorded two saves to keep the Lions off the scoreboard. Ortiz tallied three saves for Saint Leo.
Maria Castorino-Mujica fired off a team-high four shots to lead the Saints.
Saint Leo was led by Carolina Solis-Deleon and Briana Yamamoto, who tallied two shots apiece.
Flagler opens Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday (Sept. 28) as they welcome Young Harris College to Saints Field for a noon start.
