ST. AUGUSTINE –
Sara Sandberg scored two goals, including the game-winner, as No. 14 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) Flagler College topped Rollins College 3-2 in a non-conference women's soccer match Saturday evening at Saints Field.
Flagler remains undefeated at 4-0-0 while Rollins had its three-match winning streak snapped and fell to 3-2-0.
The winning tally came in the 79
th minute. The Rollins keeper had a short goal kick that
Charlene Nowotny was able to control. With the ball at her feet, just about 10 yards shy of the top of the box, Nowotny lifted a pass to Sandberg who had slipped away from her defender and tucked her shot inside the left post.
Nowotny had given the Saints an early lead with her goal in the 26
th minute with
Hannah Dolores assisting. Two minutes later, Sandberg gave the Saints a 2-0 lead.
The Tars were able to pull to within a goal before the half as Sarah Skala headed in a corner kick in the 34
th minute.
Sarah Buckley scored the equalizer in the 75
th minute off of a free kick.
Sarah-Lisa Dubel collected two saves for Flagler while Elena Beasley finished with five saves for Rollins.
Flagler out-shot Rollins 17-12 and held an 8-4 advantage in shots on frame. The Tars took 12 corner kicks while the Saints had seven.
Flagler plays its penultimate non-conference match on Wednesday (Sept. 25) at Saint Leo University. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
