Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sandberg scores a goal and adds an assist in 3-0 win

BOCA RATON, Fla. – No. 22 (United Soccer Coaches Division II) Flagler College erupted for three second half goals en route to a 3-0 victory over Lynn University in non-conference women's soccer action on Saturday night.

The Saints improved to 2-0 with the win, using an offensive barrage to outduel the Fighting Knights (1-1) on their home turf. Flagler out-shot Lynn 33-11, including 22 of those being on frame.

"Lynn made the game difficults for us, particularly in the first half," said Flagler women's head soccer coach Ashley Martin. ""We knew we had to raise our game and we were confident we could eventually find the back of the net. It pleases me greatly that we have kept another clean sheet, which was thanks to good defensive pressure all over the field."

Lorena Lopez and Sara Sandberg each scored from the penalty spot during a two minute stretch early in the second half that saw Flagler take command of the match. Charlene Nowotny added her first goal of the season in the waning moments to seal the victory for the Saints as rain poured down on Bobby Campbell Stadium.

It was Nowotny that created the first opportunity for the Saints in the 47th minute, drawing contact from Lynn goalkeeper Devan Malcolm following a long cross into the box. Lopez stepped up to take the ensuing penalty and beat Malcolm to her left for a 1-0 Saints lead.

Just over two minutes later, Flagler's relentless pressure drew another foul in the box and Sandberg calmly placed her penalty into the lower left corner for her second goal of the season and a 2-0 Saints advantage.

Sandberg capped her night by assisting on Nowotny's strike in the 86th minute, laying a pass into the path of Nowotny who one-timed a rocket from just inside the 18-yard box that beat Malcolm far post for the final three-goal margin.

The Saints forced Malcolm into 19 saves, asserting themselves offensively for the majority of the contest.

Sarah-Lisa Dubel was solid in goal for the Saints, making four saves to record her second clean sheet in as many outings.

Flagler will make its home debut Wednesday (Sept. 18) when it plays host to Florida Southern as part of the Saints Soccer Fall Kick-Off event. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
