ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Flagler College scored all eight runs in two innings and held on late to knock off No. 27 (Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30) Eckerd College 8-5 in a non-conference baseball game Monday evening at the Turley Complex.
Flagler wraps up the regular season with a 29-21 overall record. The Saints will now get ready for the Peach Belt Conference Tournament this weekend at Drysdale Field. Eckerd, who just came off taking 2-of-3 at No. 2 Tampa, concluded its regular season with a 30-17 record.
The Saints erupted to score five runs in the second inning, sending nine men to the plate.
Connor Laspina started the deluge with a lead-off single to left-center and then stole second. Two batters, he scored on
Elliott Schubert's single up the middle to give Flagler a 1-0 lead.
A couple of wild pitches and a walk put runners on the corners with one out.
Dillon Reed hit a single through the right side of the infield to score Schubert. An infield single loaded the bases and
Jason Moore followed with a two-run double down the left field line.
Flagler first three hitters in the order went 10-for-16 at the plate with five runs batted in and they scored two runs. Reed collected four singles, scored a run, and drove in one.
Aaron Anderson added three singles, two runs batted in, and he scored a run. Moore went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
The Saints tacked on three more runs in the third thanks to a two-run single by Anderson.
The Tritons struck for a run in the fourth, two more in the fifth, and added another two runs in the seventh.
Flagler's
Ethan Jones and
Nick Martinez slammed the door shut in the last two innings. The duo allowed just two hits and struck out one to preserve the win. Martinez, the ninth pitcher used by the Saints, recorded his sixth save of the season.
Blair Calvo (2-3), who started the game, allowed one hit and struck out a batter in his lone inning.
Drew Martin (2-4) allowed five runs on seven hits in two innings of work for Eckerd.
Nick Conti collected two singles while Garrett Hiott went 2-for-5 with a double and he scored a run. Mitch Calandra singled twice and scored a run. Matthew Miller added two singles.
The two teams combined for 28 hits (15 for Flagler and 13 for Eckerd), but both teams each stranded 12 runners on base.
