Dillon Reed’s game-ending single completes late rally

ST. AUGUSTINE – For the first time in 19 tries this season, the Flagler College baseball team was able to rally after trailing though eight innings and pulled out a 3-2 win over Francis Marion University in a Peach Belt Conference Tournament Pool B game Friday evening at Drysdale Field.

Flagler improved to 30-21 while Francis Marion dropped to 27-20. The Saints are 1-0 in pool play while the Patriots are 0-1.

Trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the ninth, it was Frankie Martello who started the rally with a lead-off single through the left side of the infield off Patriot reliever Austin Moody who just came into the game. Nikolas Dague came in to pinch run for Martello.

Sean Lawlor added a single and then both runners advanced a base on Connor Lapsina's sacrifice bunt. Steven DiPuglia was intentionally walked to load the bases. Elliott Schubert was hit by a pitch and that tied the game and Moody was lifted for Weston Rogers.

Rogers induced a ground out where Francis Marion was able to cut down the run at the plate. But Reed followed with a single through the left side to end the game.

Robert Girgis (9-0) tossed his second complete game of the year and scattered eight hits. He struck out nine batters and allowed the two runs.

Seven different Saints got a base hit. Schubert drove in two runs.

Moody (1-1) took the loss in relief. He worked one-third of an inning and allowed two runs on two hits. Josh Bobrowski tossed seven innings and allowed just one run on four hits. He struck out eight batters.

Nick Pappas collected two hits for the Patriots. Fred Wadsworth went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and one run batted in.

Flagler takes on USC Aiken, who defeated Columbus State 3-1 in the final game of the day. The Saints and Pacers will begin at 10 a.m. at Drysdale Field.
