ST. AUGUSTINE – No. 25 (Oracle/ITA Division II Top 25) Flagler College extended its winning streak to five consecutive matches with a 6-1 win over No. 39 Georgia College in a Peach Belt Conference women's tennis match Sunday afternoon at the Flagler Tennis Center.
Flagler improved to 13-5 overall and 6-1 in the Peach Belt. The Saints have won five-of-the-last-six matches in the series, and today's match was the only one played in St. Augustine. Georgia College slipped to 12-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
The Saints swept through doubles play.
Paloma Martinez and
Felicitas Runkel blanked Paula Garriga and Kim Yatribi 6-0 and the point was clinched when
Anika Nissen and
Lixin Wang won their 12
th match in a row with a 6-1 victory at No. 2.
Eden Schlagenhauf and
Alessandra Traub recorded a win at No. 1 singles.
Flagler went on to win five-of-the-six singles matches in straight sets. Martinez and Wang posted wins to give the Saints a 3-0 lead. Nissen clinched the match with her win over Yatribi at No. 3. Runkel knocked off the nation's 59
th-ranked player, Emilia Richter, 7-6(2) and 6-3.Traub also won her match.
The Saints close out their regular season with two matches next weekend. Flagler hosts Young Harris College on Saturday at 1 p.m. before wrapping up the year next Sunday (April 14) against the University of North Georgia.
