Flagler scores five unanswered runs to rally past USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. – Flagler College scored five unanswered runs in the final three innings to rally past USC Aiken 10-7 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

Flagler snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 28-20 overall and 19-10 in the Peach Belt. The Saints broke its record for PBC wins (18 in 2015) with the win today. USC Aiken dropped to 26-20 overall and 15-11 in conference play.

The Saints trailed 7-5 going into the seventh inning. Sean Lawlor hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot to right-center to cut the Flagler deficit to one run.

Henry Cartrett (0-3), who picked up a save last night, started the eighth on the mound for the Pacers. He got Dillon Reed to ground out to second base, but Philip Watcher fumbled the grounder and Reed was safe. Aaron Anderson followed with a single to right. Jason Moore stepped to the plate and promptly singled to left to score Reed to tie the game.

That chased Cartrett from the game and Daniel Wiggins was called on to stop the Saints rally. He threw a wild pitch to move both runners up a base. Frankie Martello and Lawlor hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to give Flagler a 9-7 lead.

The Saints added another unearned run in the ninth for insurance.

Ethan Jones (2-4) picked up the win in relief as he was brought in fifth inning to quell the Pacers five-run fifth. He tossed four-plus innings, scattered four hits and allowed one run. Jones walked three and struck out three. Nick Martinez recorded his fifth save as he allowed one hit, but struck out the last three batters in the ninth.

Lawlor went 2-for-3 with the two homers, scored three runs, and had three runs batted in. Aaron Anderson collected two singles, scored a run, and knocked in another. Steven DiPuglia went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

Cartrett allowed one earned run on two hits as he faced three batters and did not retire anyone in taking the loss for USC Aiken. Zach Rafuse started and allowed five runs on six hits in six innings. He struck out 10 batters.

Chandler Rogers went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Conner Durden had two hits, including a grand slam, and drove in five runs.

The same two teams will conclude the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.

NOTE: Today's win was only the second time this season the Saints won when trailing after six innings (2-16). The last time Flagler rallied in a similar situation was March 5 vs. Assumption College.
